MOLD & MYCOTOXINS ARE EVERYWHERE

Fungi play a crucial role in ecosystem functioning as decomposers. Some species of fungi, including certain molds, produce harmful substances known as mycotoxins which can pose significant health risks to a portion of the population.

MOLD SPORES RELEASE MYCOTOXINS

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by certain species of fungi, including certain types of mold. These substances can be present on moldy foods and in indoor spaces where mold growth is present. When ingested or inhaled, some mycotoxins can lead to adverse health effects in both humans and animals.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF MYCOTOXINS?

In certain conditions, mold has the ability to produce mycotoxins as a defense mechanism. These toxic substances, while harmful to humans and animals, serve as a defensive mechanism when the mold is threatened and help in the dispersal of its fragments.

WHERE DO MOLD AND MYCOTOXINS EXIST?

Molds and mycotoxins are ubiquitous and can proliferate on diverse materials such as wood, paper, textiles, and foodstuffs. They thrive in warm and moist conditions, but can still persist in dry and cold environments. These microorganisms can be present in the air, on surfaces, in soil and water, both indoors and outdoors. They can be found growing on various surfaces including walls, ceilings, floors and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

WATER DAMAGED BUILDINGS ARE SICK BUILDINGS

Water-damaged buildings (WDBs) are structures that have experienced water infiltration, leading to the growth of mold and bacteria. Leaks, floods, and excessive humidity can contribute to the sick building syndrome while promoting mold and bacterial growth on surfaces within the buildings. Mycotoxins may then be released into the air from damaged walls, ceilings, floors, and HVAC systems, potentially causing health issues for that building’s occupants.

LONG TERM EFFECT OF MOLD OR MYCOTOXIN EXPOSURE ON PEOPLE

The HLA-DR gene plays a crucial role in the body’s response to mycotoxins that are produced by black mold and bacteria found in water-damaged buildings. The gene is particularly relevant to Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). Approximately 20-30% of the population is estimated to express the HLA-DR gene, which has been linked to heightened susceptibility to CIRS disease.
